EcoLife is about participation, not just observation. For more than 30 years, we have developed relationships with wildlife veterinarians, conservationists, researchers, rehabilitation centres and conservation projects across Southern Africa. Our expeditions give participants access to the people and places behind the scenes, with opportunities to learn, participate and understand the science and challenges involved in conservation. You don't just visit Africa's wildlife. You step into the world of those working to protect it.
EcoLife offers three main types of expeditions, each designed around the interests, experience and goals of our participants.StudentsFor students studying veterinary science, animal health, conservation, wildlife management, marine biology and related fields. Selected programmes may qualify for university credits.Vets-in-the-Wild | 2 or 3 weeksWildlife Conservation | 3 weeksMarine Biology & Conservation | 2 weeks Professional VeterinariansFor qualified veterinarians and veterinary professionals looking to expand their wildlife medicine experience through practical fieldwork and accredited CE/CPD opportunities.ProfVets | 2 weeksWildlife & Conservation EnthusiastsFor anyone with a passion for wildlife and conservation who wants to go beyond traditional tourism and experience conservation from the inside. Each expedition has been developed for a particular audience and level of experience. Individual programme pages provide details of the activities, duration, learning opportunities and requirements, allowing you to choose the experience that best suits you.If you're unsure which programme is right for you, contact us and we'll be happy to help.
Most EcoLife expeditions run between 10 and 22 days, although some specialist programmes may be shorter or longer. The exact duration is clearly shown on each expedition page.
You don't need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of general fitness is recommended.Expeditions can involve long days outdoors, walking on uneven terrain, getting in and out of safari vehicles and working in warm, dusty or remote environments. Our experienced team manages activities carefully and ensures participants are properly briefed and supported.
Where it is safe, ethical and appropriate, participants have opportunities to take part in genuine conservation and veterinary activities under the supervision of experienced professionals. The level of participation depends on the expedition. Professional veterinary programmes generally offer greater involvement in wildlife capture, health assessments and veterinary procedures, while wildlife enthusiast programmes focus more on observation, learning and selected hands-on activities
Several of our professional veterinary expeditions are approved for Continuing Education (CE) or Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits. The number of credits varies by programme and is stated on the relevant expedition page. Accreditation may be provided through the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or another relevant professional body.CE/CPD credits apply only to designated professional programmes and are not available on general wildlife enthusiast or student expeditions unless specifically stated.
