Following decades of civil war that left Kissama National Park effectively devoid of large wildlife, Prof van Hoven helped establish the Kissama Foundation. Acting as a modern-day Noah, he orchestrated the ambitious translocation and airlift of elephants in family groups, giraffes, and a dozen other species from South Africa and Botswana back into the war-torn Angolan wilderness. This monumental restoration triumph earned him international acclaim, including the United Nations Environment Programme’s Joseph R. Daly Award, proving that even the most devastated ecosystems can be brought back to life.

Back on Earth, his work revolutionized African conservation economics. Prof van Hoven was a pioneer of the "Value to Save" paradigm. He proved that by allowing private game ranching and sustainable wildlife utilization to thrive alongside state parks, wildlife could become a viable economic driver. This market-driven approach helped South Africa's wildlife numbers grow an astonishing 40-fold since the 1960s, turning fragile drylands into thriving biodiverse habitats that actively outperform traditional cattle farming.

At the 2025 Wildlife Ranching South Africa (WRSA) Gala Dinner and Awards, Prof van Hoven was celebrated for his unparalleled contributions to the industry. As a lifelong champion of sustainable resource management and ethical practices, receiving this recognition from WRSA solidifies his status as a true legend and lifetime custodian of South Africa's natural heritage.

In 1997, he realized that the best way to secure the future of our planet was to share this knowledge with the next generation.
