What began as a small educational initiative has grown into a unique journey of wildlife conservation, hands-on learning and unforgettable experiences. This is the story of EcoLife Expeditions.

EcoLife’s roots go back to 1997, when EcoLife Expeditions was established as an extension programme at Colorado State University. The vision was simple but powerful: give students the opportunity to move beyond the classroom and experience wildlife conservation in the field.

From the beginning, EcoLife was built around experiential learning. Participants were not simply observers. They were encouraged to get involved, ask questions, work alongside conservation professionals and gain a practical understanding of the challenges facing Africa’s wildlife.

Over the years, the programme developed and expanded. EcoLife became accredited as a six-credit university course at several institutions, allowing students to combine academic learning with practical field experience. Expeditions evolved to include wildlife management, veterinary conservation, rehabilitation, game capture, anti-poaching initiatives, community conservation and the complex relationship between people, wildlife and the environment.

One of EcoLife’s greatest strengths has always been its network of experienced conservationists, veterinarians, researchers and wildlife professionals. This has enabled participants to experience aspects of conservation that are rarely available through traditional education.

Today, EcoLife Expeditions welcomes students, professional veterinarians and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. While the programmes have evolved, the original philosophy remains unchanged: learning by doing and connecting people with conservation through real-world experiences.

Over more than two decades, EcoLife students have gone on to build successful careers in veterinary science, wildlife management, conservation and related fields. Many continue to make a meaningful contribution to the protection of wildlife and natural ecosystems.

EcoLife’s story is ultimately a story about people – people who have shared a passion for Africa, learned from its wildlife and returned home inspired to make a difference.

From a university extension programme to an international conservation education experience, EcoLife continues to inspire wildlife conservation through unforgettable expeditions.

ABOUT ECOLIFE

For the past 30 years, EcoLife Expeditions has been bringing people into the heart of wildlife conservation and veterinary science across Southern Africa. Our expeditions provide direct access to the field, where participants learn alongside experienced wildlife veterinarians, conservationists, researchers and rangers working on real-world conservation challenges. From wildlife medicine and veterinary procedures to rehabilitation, capture operations, disease management and conservation research, our expeditions connect scientific knowledge with practical experience. We believe the most meaningful learning takes place in the field, through direct involvement and interaction with the professionals doing the work. With small groups and carefully developed programmes, EcoLife offers an educational experience that is authentic, practical and deeply connected to the future of Africa’s wildlife.
